Submission Guidelines (Submit a book for review)

Please Note: I will not be accepting any new books for review

until further notice. If we have already discussed your book,

this is an exception. I am working my way through a pile of

books as tall as me! I will be back to accepting review

requests as soon as possible. Thank you:)

I like to read across a broad array of genres, however, there are some things that I will not accept. I DO NOT UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES take books that are blatant erotica or sexual in nature. I do not accept books for review that are strictly religious or political. By this I do not mean that I will not accept a Christian fiction or other religious themed work, I mean I will not accept a “God does not exist or you should believe in this faith because…” type of book. I’m stubborn and set in my ways and I like it that way.

I will read both fiction and non-fiction titles.

I absolutely love children’s books. I have four kids of my own ranging in age from 2-8 and they love being part of the action when I get to review a children’s or young adult title.

I have a special place in my heart for romances, particularly ones that follow the traditional love angle and have great character building. I want to love your characters.

I prefer to read books that are under 120,000 words as I have a lot of reviews to do and the longer the book is, the longer it takes me to get through it and offer a review.

I currently accept unsolicited works on a case-by-case basis, meaning if I like the sound of the book and I think it has been edited well enough to be worth reading, then I will take it into consideration. I accept books by independently published authors as well, but also on a case-by-case basis.

I will accept books in either Kindle or paperback format. I am not thrilled with reading PDF versions due to the highlighting and note-taking limitations this places on me. I like being able to go back and look at what I liked about your book and mention it in the review.

If you are interested in having me review your book, please do not expect miracles. I will do my utmost to ensure that you get the most timely review possible, but my current backlog is about six weeks out and that can become longer or shorter at any time based on how much time I have to devote to reading.

Please be aware before you send anything to me that I am always honest. What this means, is that if I dislike your book, I will not be afraid to say so. I will never do so in a way that is degrading to the author, but  I also will not sugar coat the way I feel about any book. If you have not become thick-skinned enough by the time you publish your book to handle a review that is not glowing then please consider your choice of careers carefully.

So, if you have read all of that and I have not sent you screaming into the hills, here is what I am looking for  in a book review request:

Make sure you send me a brief synopsis of your work, four to five lines will be sufficient. State the genre of your work as best you can. If it doesn’t quite fit in any one genre, just say so.  Include your name and if you have a pen name please make that clear so I do not make a mistake and reveal your real name in my review. List the word count of your book and the publication date. Please tell me where I can find a link to a sample chapter of your book and PLEASE PLEASE ONLY ASK ME TO REVIEW ONE BOOK AT A TIME. THAT IS ALL I WILL COMMIT TO. Make sure you leave me your pertinent contact info.

If your book has a scheduled release date and you require a review sooner, please make that clear in your request so that I may decide whether I can accommodate it.
You can send all review requests to my gmail account at

Please put review request in the subject line.

I do not guarantee a review just because you query, however; spelling my name right does tend to make me more receptive! I appreciate the time you took to read this and look forward to reading your work!

Please do not send me your book without querying first or it will be promptly deleted from my email.

  1. Love this part: “Please be aware before you send anything to me that I am always honest. What this means, is that if I dislike your book, I will not be afraid to say so. Nice that you offer such a service!

    • Thanks for stopping by and saying hello! Yeah…I was kind of hoping I might scare away those who were expecting an easy five star. I do understand how tough it is to write a book and to be criticized once you put your work out there, but I also want people to be prepared. :) I wasn’t born with much of a filter and I tend to say whatever comes to mind.

  2. Hello Ionia,
Thanks for liking our Pacific Rim Press blog on the newly published, ‘ Manichaeism 101′. Glad to see you that you have well-thought out submission rules for reviews.

  3. Hi ioniamartin, thanks for the like. i like that you are honest. I will send you a request to review my book if and when I already have one. thanks for sharing your talent.

  4. Hi Ionia,
Thanks so much for following my blog “So… You Want to Be a Writer”. I will send you a request for book review soon. You sound like a reviewer who is honest and above board, and I appreciate that. :)

  5. Thank you for stopping by my blog site, I have three books out currently and two more should be out by summer. I want to risk you not liking them in a review, but the review request button above does not seem to be working. You can contact me at or at my blog. I will continue to try the link over the next few days, but it keeps giving me a message it cannot find it. Thanks!

  6. Hi, I like your blog, and really like the notion that you’re a musician, photographer, reader, and writer. Cross fertilization, creatively! Also like your photos and see that you enjoy close-ups. I NEVER leave home without a pocket camera, and can think of no better way of keeping your vision sharp. What’s your music? Are your kids creative—well, stupid question, isn’t it. All kids are creative.

    • Thank you so much, and it is very nice to meet you. I do like close-ups. I also have a thing for wide angle shots, but in my tests they didn’t look do great on my site. I was impressed with your site as well. Nice to meet another nature lover and photo enthusiast! I play classical piano pieces and a bit of contemporary music as well. You are so right, kids are very creative! I look forward to more of your posts.

  7. You are one brave lady! Enjoyed your forthright opinion and directions. You are the reviewer I’ve been seeking. I humbly hope you will consider my book for your perusal. Thank you for this blog.

  8. Really appreciate your submission guidelines. Honest feedback is gold dust to a writer and, even if it is painful, I find comments on what hasn’t worked almost more useful than praise and often more difficult to come by. With a fiction and a non-fiction book in the pipeline, I look forward to submitting a request (one at a time, I promise) for a review.

    • I will look forward to it. I was named after my grandmother, who had family in Greece. I think we were both names after the Ionian regions of Greece. I use Ionia Martin because it is less of a mouthful than Ionia Anatolia Mariah Florescu-Martin try putting that on a standard form :)

  9. I really enjoyed reading your submission guidelines! I do have one question though, when you say paperback or Kindle format, does that mean you’d rather have the (real, able-to-hold-in-your-hand-and-smell-the-new-book-smell) paperback or the (really-is-on-my-kindle-device) kindle edition, or is that how the document (not PDF, right?) must be set up? I’d really love to send you my book, (it is a YA western fiction) but am unsure how to get it to you. Please let me know! Thank you very much!

  10. Hi Ionia, nice to see you on my blog – I’m hoping you liked what I wrote about ‘The Lion’s World’, I found it very moving and hoped that came across in what I said. All the best, Ruth

    • So sorry for not responding sooner, wordpress has been incredibly annoying the last few days with all the bugs and crashes. Any kindle ready format is fine, MOBI, Word Doc, or PDF

  11. What a kind and generous thing to do! AND you tell it like it is. I current have a work in progress that is about 25% complete (but the beginning was the hard 25%). I hope you are taking reviews when I finish it!
